“A Mulligan in Life”
Have you ever made a mistake in your Christian life and wish you could have a do over? Golf has something similar, and it is called a mulligan. For the non-golfers out there, a mulligan is an extra stroke allowed after a poor shot, not counted on the scorecard. You won’t see this on TV when you are watching the pros play, but you will see it when the guys meet after work for a round of golf. The guys I played with usually allow a Mulligan on first hole of our round as all of us have been sitting at a desk working all day and it takes a few shots to get our swing in the groove.
Living the Christian life is not a perfect smooth path without any bumps. I will go along fine then I commit a sin, which I know is wrong and I should know better. Well, in the Christian life this does not mean I lose my salvation, but it does put a barrier in the fellowship that I have between Jesus Christ and me.
So, what does a Christian do? In the Bible it talks about this in 1 John. If you go to 1 John 1:9, it reads” If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” This means Christians need to be prepared to confess the sins we commit, and we need to be specific (He already knows).
It is worth reading the next verse 1 John 1:10, “If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” This verse explains itself. The Christian can strive to live a life that is more Christ like, this is the process of sanctification, but we won’t fully get there while on this side of heaven.
My first Sunday school lesson I ever taught was titled “We need to live in a Constant State of Repentance”. So, when I sin in my life, I need to confess my sin and then I need to repent or change my way (change from doing the sin). This allows me to renew my fellowship with Christ.
