Captain James Bollen (1629 – 1682) New York from the Dutch 9th Great Grandfather

Captain James Bollen played an important role in England taking over what is now New York from the Dutch. It turns out he was my 9th Great Grandfather, and we are his descendants.

From "The History of Union County NJ 1664-1923 by A Van Doren Honeyman 1923 James Bollen came over with the English fleet in 1664, and as he was "Captain," he may have been in command of one of the vessels that pulled into New Amsterdam (now New York). He was deputized by (Col.) Nicolls to receive the surrender of the fort at New Amsterdam, (Sep. 8, 1664) and was appointed by him "Commissary of the Ammunition at New York." He remained at New York until August 1665, as his name appears often in court records. James Bollen was made secretary of the new province and accompanied the governor in August to Elizabethtown."

We are descendants from his daughter Mary Bollen. She married Peter Stout who was the son of Richard Stout and Penelope Prince. Penelope was one the ancestor that was attacked by Indians and left for dead.
