“Christ Will See You Through Your Storms”

We all probably have had times in our lives when we faced storms that seemed daunting. This can be very frightening. Many people in our country are going through a storm right now.

I have had to face some big storms in my life. The storms came in many directions, the loss of a loved one; a serious health issue in the family; uncertainty in a job; or a child that has gone wayward. These are big storms in anyone’s life that can cause us to worry and be very frightening.

There is one story in the bible that encourages and can lift us up and it is the story of Peter walking on water. If you remember the story in the book of Matthew, the Disciples were in a boat and the wind was strong. The Disciples saw what they thought was a ghost walking on water and they were terrified. Then Jesus calls out to the Disciples to not be afraid. Peter calls out to Jesus to have Jesus tell him to walk out to him. Peter’s faith was strong, and he got out of the boat and into the water to walk towards Jesus. Peter was walking on water. Once Peter took his focus off Jesus and focused on the storm and wind, he began to sink. Jesus then grabbed Peter’s hand and caught him. Jesus then lets Peter know that he had little faith and asks him why he doubted.

As Christians, when we go through these storms of life, it is important to keep our eyes focused on Christ. There is peace that we can have when our faith and focus is on Jesus Christ. However, if we take our focus off Jesus Christ, and focus on the storm it can put fear in our hearts.

The next time we are in one of the storms that life can throw at us, remember this story. We can use this story to encourage ourselves to keep our faith strong and keep our focus on Christ.

Matthews 14: 25 – 33

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
