Deacon Training

Do you have one of those activities in life that gives you enjoyment, and then at the same time can be downright frustrating? For me that game is golf. A few years ago, some guys at church started to meet on Thursday afternoons to play golf. It was called “Deacon Training”, and I will try to explain how the name was given.

The game of golf is one of those sports you can’t master. So, some holes you do okay, but then some holes not so much. This is where the game gets frustrating. The key thing is how we handle the frustration.

  • Do we count it all joy that we have fellowship and the enjoyment of playing golf?

  • Do we let the frustration of the game lead to letting the tongue slip or throw the golf club when we hit the ball deep in the woods?

To lessen the frustration, humor is often needed. It was often said to a golf partner who just hammered his drive deep into the woods, Proverbs 32:1 says, “The woods are full of guys who can hit the ball 320 yards”. Of course, there is not a chapter 32 in the book of Proverbs there is only 31.

You can be a Deacon and a golfer. As in all activities there can be a lot to be thankful for. God blesses us with activity that includes fellowship, exercise, and having fun with your golf friends. When I have this attitude, I can laugh at myself when I chili-dip a wedge (non-golfers chili-dip is where I might need to use a wedge to hit the ball 30 yards onto the green and I end up hitting it 2 yards). I have also found some friends that are not quite ready to be a Deacon as I see their golf club fly across the green following their misguided golf shot with a few words added.

Christians can have fun in fellowship with other Christians. It is OK to make each other laugh!

Ecclesiastes 3:1,4 – “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under Heaven…a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.”

There are certainly times for sorrow when tragedy hits, but in normal day to day you can have joy and fun!
