“God Prepares Us”

Can you recall a time when God has prepared you for something that you were going to go through in the future? Our God is Omniscience, which is saying that God is all knowing including the past and the future. This happens in our lives probably more than we realize. When you do realize that this has happened to you it is another moment that gives you an opportunity to praise God.

About 15 years ago I was involved in a ministry at the local Veterans Administration Nursing Home. This ministry was giving a devotion to veterans in the Alzheimer unit at the Veterans Nursing Home. I gave a bi-monthly devotion in this unit for 3 years with my brother-in-Christ, Gary. The men in this unit were mostly Korean War vets with some of the older men being WWII vets. It was an amazing experience that prepared me for future events in my life.

As I look back, I had the privilege to be used by God in this ministry. The veterans did not remember me being there two weeks earlier, but it was amazing how they knew the words of the gospel songs we played. I gave a short devotion that a few would listen to, and I had those vets that seemed to respond to my devotion more than others. A reality of Alzheimer’s is that I had some vets who passed away as time went by. I remember one visit a staff member asked me to pray over one of the patients that was in the final hours of his life. He ended up passing away during the night. I thank God that he used me for that moment.

God used this time to prepare me for when my dad was diagnosed with dementia. My dad had Parkinson’s and suffered with Lewy Body Dementia. God would teach me to have compassion for my dad and how to talk with my dad during his illness. It is hard to see your parents or even a spouse gets a diagnosis that causes their health to slowly deteriorate.

Thank God that He knew I needed to be prepared to handle this time with my dad. I often think what God is preparing me for now. What is God preparing you for?

O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.
