Light of the World

Matthew 5:14-16
Jesus told His Disciples that they are the light of the world.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
As a small child one of the first songs, we learned in Sunday School was” This little light of Mine”. The lyrics are sung by children, but they still apply to us at any age. The lyric starts off “This little light of Mine, I am going to let it shine”.
God intends for our lives to make a difference for His purpose. The people who live around us are watching us and forming opinions about us. Whether we like it or not, we are influencing them, and as Christians we have an opportunity to impact their lives for good by living according to God’s instructions.
Being the light of the world is not a choice we make but a fact based on our relationship with Jesus Christ. We are lights because Jesus, the true Light, is living within us through His Spirit. As His life is manifest in our disposition and actions, His light shines forth for others to see Christ in us.
One of the things I told my sons growing up in church, was watch the things you do, because other people especially little kids were watching you. We are an example to a world that lives in darkness. Let’s take advantage of the opportunity we have today and live as chosen and holy children of God, empowered by Him to let our light shine before men so they can glorify our Father in heaven.
