Samaritan Woman at the Well
John 4:9 (NIV)
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?”
The Samaritan women at the well was asked by Jesus to draw Him some water from Jacob’s well to drink. She questioned Jesus why He would ask a Samaritan woman to give Him water. The Samaritans and Jews did not associate with each other.
Jesus answered the Samaritan woman that He had water and that His water was living water.
John 4:10 (NIV)
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
The Samaritan women asked how He would get this water since He had nothing to draw it from the well. She did not understand what Jesus was offering her with the living water. The woman at the well had her sins “washed away” by Jesus. Jesus offers divine mercy in the living water of grace, which washes away sins and cleanses souls. The woman went to the well to get a jug of water. Instead, she got much more, including a cleansed and refreshed spiritual life. She also found out that Jesus was the coming Messiah.
John 4: 24-26 (NIV)
24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
The Samaritan women went running to tell everyone she knew of the good news of Jesus. Are we telling others about Jesus?
