What is the Meaning of Life?
People have all kinds of ideas for the meaning of life. John Lennon sang, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” I have known people who have had their life and self-worth tied up in their jobs and professions. The problem is that when your job or profession falls apart then they struggle with their self-worth.
God did not intend for us to have a meaning of life that does not include Jesus Christ. He did intend for our meaning and purpose of life to be found in Jesus Christ. What does this mean and what does it bring into our lives?
First, we have been forgiven. Christians have been forgiven of their sins and will spend eternity in Heaven. That is a life changing foundation for our purpose in life. We were created for God’s pleasure, and He knew we would need a Savior. So, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ to save us from our sins.
Ephesians 1:8-10
8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, 9 he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.
Second, we have freedom. We are free of the penalties and punishment of sins. I have known people who lived under the burden that they felt like they could lose their salvation if they sinned after accepting Christ as their Savior. Christ died for our sins once and for all. We are not perfect, and we will sin, but if we confess our sins and repent of our sins we can renew our fellowship with Christ.
1 John 1:9
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness
Then as Christians we have the indwelling Holy Spirit. When we believed we were marked with a seal of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 1:13
13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
We have a hope for the future. Our inheritance is guaranteed.
Ephesians 1:18
18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength.
Then we are to Love the Lord our God with all of our heart and soul. Then we need to love others.
Mark 12:30-31
30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. “There is no commandment greater than these.”
