“Your Words Matter”
Proverbs 13:3(NLV)
3 “He who watches over his mouth keeps his life. He who opens his lips wide will be destroyed.”
The world can be a difficult place, where many of us face an environment where it can be difficult to watch the words we say. How many times have you said something without thinking of the ramifications of what you just said and then it was too late to take them back? (Been there)
Do we use our words to build people up or tear people down? As a believer, Paul says in Ephesians not to let any unwholesome talk to come out of our mouths.
Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
As we look back on our week can we say that our words were used in building others up according to their needs? If we change our hearts, we can change our speech. In this day and age where so much of our world is divided and many seem to enjoy tearing each other down just because they think differently.
Oswald Chambers writes, “The great test of a man’s character is his tongue”. James says it very well in chapter 1.
James 1:26 (NIV)
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
Those are convicting words that James gives us. You will find that as your walk draws closer to God it becomes easier to control our tongue. Let the words we speak this week be worthy of the One who saved us.
